The pandemic has had an impact on all our lives. We have stayed at home, worked at home, and had the chance to re-evaluate our lives and what we want to do with them. Particularly our career goals. Working from home has meant that we have assessed whether our current role or industry is the right one for you.
Or perhaps you were already heading in the right direction but have reached a block thanks to Covid-19? No matter the reason, here are the best ways to kickstart your career goals; now, we are starting to return to our “new normal”.
Focus on soft skills
Of course, those harder skills are vital for doing your job right, but you should never underestimate the softer skills. These are non-technical, and whilst they may not relate directly to the tasks you need to carry out as a part of your job, they relate to critical thinking, people skills, empathy, communication, and teamwork. You may already have been able to do this with ease but working remotely for a year and a half on your own is likely to have impacted how well you perform these things.
Look remotely
Many employers are going to realise the benefits of working remotely and offering this choice to their employees. This means they have started considering hiring people out of their local area to be based solely (or primarily) remotely. This is great news for job seekers, too, as it allows them to consider different roles that they might not have been able to apply for before broadening their job searching and helping them find a position they love.
Be digital
Many of us have had to get to grips with a digital way of living of late, which is set to stay at least in some parts. This means that if you have started to get used to digital working and you have tried your best to do this already, then keep it up. Those digital skills are not only valuable for a covid way, but also in the world afterwards.
Prepare yourself
While many of these tips concern your job search and your skills, you also need to think about yourself as a person. Take the time to prepare yourself mentally for returning to work and what this may mean for you. Consider how being back at work will feel and how you can continue to balance your working life and personal life, too. Something that you might not have been able to do before remote working became a thing.
Is now the time to move?
Have you been happily plodding along in your current job? Thinking that things are okay but that you are not quite as happy as you could be? If this is true for you, then maybe now is the time to take the plunge and move on? The world is different from how it was two years ago, and we have all learnt that we need to take charge of our own lives and our own decisions. So, perhaps this is the sign that you need to be brave and make the change?
We don’t really know how life will look for the next year or so, but what we do know is that now is the ideal time to try and take a different approach and change how you do things.
