Securing your first job and taking that first step on your career path is an exciting time. Whilst many people won’t take a job to start with that matches what they want to do in the future, that doesn’t mean that you should take this early career choice for granted.

Your first job is your chance to get out there in the working world and learn more about what to expect and yourself.

There are plenty of great choices for securing a job, but we think that a fantastic option for young people is to choose a start-up. Here are the main reasons why we think you should work for a start-up as your first job.

You will get to try everything

When you work for a larger, more established company, you are likely to be allocated specific tasks that you will be expected to carry out every day. These may be great if you want to learn about a particular niche, but what if you’re going to want to experience everything and see what you like the most?

When you work for a start-up, you will be exposed to a variety of different roles within the company, things that you may not have even though you would get the chance to do, which means that you can learn more about what you are good at.

You will build your skills

Moving on from this point, when you perform a range of roles within a business, you will be able to develop all those key skills you will need in the future, which is excellent news for you and your future employers.

You won’t ever get bored

You may think that you are going to be busy when you are at work each day and whilst this is true, it doesn’t mean that there won’t be a time when you feel bored. Boredom can come in when you are constantly repeating the same task, time and time, and it can leave you feeling deflated and even cause a dip in your performance.

Because the work you perform in a start-up is likely to be more varied (and possibly more reactive too as things change and grow), you are much less likely to feel bored, which will help to keep you focused.

You may be able to help them grow

Sure, you don’t have a whole lot of business knowledge as you are only just starting out on your career journey, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t have anything valuable to input when it comes to your employer and their business.

Sometimes it is those fresh eyes and brains that come up with the best ideas. So, if you see something that you think could work better or that you would change, then why not try and put this idea forward?

Whether you are just starting out or you are a seasoned worker, the thing to remember is that a start-up could be the exact employer you have been searching for. Not only can you benefit from working with them, but they will also benefit from having you work there and together, you can take the business forward and really help it grow.
